Washburn Tech Opens New Electrical Training Lab

A new training environment is powering tomorrow’s electricians at Washburn University Institute of Technology (Washburn Tech). The grand opening of a GreenApple Lab at Washburn Tech is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 27 in Building D at 5724 SW Huntoon St. The GreenApple Lab model is a product of Greenlee, an Emerson Company, and a first in the state of Kansas.

“Washburn Tech is thrilled to partner with Greenlee, an industry leader in electrical and building trades,” said Clark Coco, dean, Washburn Tech. “Not only will our students train on the latest, high-tech equipment, they also will have the opportunity to earn valuable, stackable and transferable industry certifications that are recognized by employers around the country.”

Those certifications are the result of a strategic relationship between Greenlee and the National Coalition of Certification Centers (NC3). This training includes skillsets such as conduit bending, voice data video network instruments and line cutting and crimping. Their partnership is designed to help today’s student become tomorrow’s highly productive employee.

“Greenlee and Emerson are proud of their relationship with Washburn Tech in providing a world-class learning environment supporting the shared mission of training the next generation of skilled employees,” Steve Lehr, director, vocational business development, Greenlee. “The graduates of the GreenApple program provide the local industry and community a solid base of well-trained employees for generations to come.”

“The grand opening today of the GreenApple lab at Washburn Tech now serves as the national model for other electrician programs across the country,” said Dan Ramirez, director of marketing and development, NC3. “As a true national standard for Career and Technical Education, NC3 looks forward to hosting many Benchmarking and Visioning Tours in Topeka for schools from across the country looking to take their programs to the next level.”
