- Topeka, Kan. – Today, Washburn University and Chartwells donated more than 3,000 meals to the Topeka Rescue Mission, an organization that brings help and hope to the homeless and impoverished. Chartwells Higher Education is the on-campus dining and catering provider for Washburn University. The surplus is a result of the difficult and important decision to move all classes for the remainder of the spring 2020 semester online and helping most students transition home from their on-campus residence.
“It’s truly sad that we don’t have the vast majority of our students on campus, eating in our on-campus dining facilities. However, I am thrilled that the food will now go to help those in need in the Topeka community,” said Janel Rutherford, director of business and auxiliary services for Washburn University. “At Washburn University, our motto is Non Nobis Solum—Not for Ourselves Alone— and it’s uplifting to see this spirit in action during these trying times with things like this food donation.”
Chartwells Higher Education shares Washburn’s spirit of giving and community. Chartwells donated approximately 450 pounds of food that will contribute in making more than 3,000 meals for the Topeka community. Chartwells Higher Education has been the on-campus dining and catering provider for Washburn University since 2006.
“At Chartwells, we believe community is much more than a physical space. It’s about supporting one another in times of need, sharing ideas and working toward a common goal” said Amanda Armstrong, regional marketing director for Chartwells High Education. “As an organization, we are committed to bettering the lives in every community we touch, today that was our friends in Topeka.”
This is just one of the many food insecurity initiatives that is supported by the Washburn University and Chartwells partnership and collaboration throughout the year.
“Each year, Chartwells contributes to Washburn’s Bods feeding Bods initiative, which assists food insecure students. With school now being closed, this donation allows us to continue to support our local Topeka community in their time of need,” said Steven Daab, senior director of Chartwells dining at Washburn University.
