Topeka, Kan. – The Sunflower Music Festival, hosted annually by Washburn University, has been cancelled for this year.  The cancellation comes as the COVID-19 virus continues to spread forcing numerous cancellations and business closings across the country and here in Kansas.

This is the first time the event has been cancelled since it started in 1987.  The nine-day festival features a wide variety of music in a series of concerts which are free and open to the public.

“The Sunflower board of directors made the reluctant decision this morning that we needed to cancel this year’s festival for the good of the entire community,” said David Wingerson, festival coordinator.  “We will be back next year.  In fact, we’ve already chosen June 18-26 as the dates for next year.”

Washburn University President Jerry Farley said he is disappointed that the festival will not take place this year, but applauded the board for their decision.

“This festival attracts musicians from around the world and it is important to protect them and the many music-lovers who attend the performances,” he said.  “We are already looking forward to hosting the Sunflower Music Festival next year at White Concert Hall and anticipate a wonderful series of outstanding performances.”
