Topeka, Kan. – The Washburn Student Government Association (WSGA) has donated $30,000 to Ichabods Moving Forward, Washburn University’s student emergency fund, and $5,000 to the Student Victim Assistance Fund. This is part of WSGA’s focus of helping fellow students in need during this difficult time.
“Our administration really wants help students, whether it is through improving resources on campus or helping students through tough times,” said Mayela Campa, vice president of WSGA. “COVID-19 has negatively impacted many Washburn students, so we saw this as a great opportunity to help as many students as possible.”
The student emergency fund at Washburn is run by the student philanthropy organization, Ichabods Moving Forward, under the guidance of the Washburn University Alumni Association and Foundation. Students enrolled in six or more hours of coursework can apply for the funds through the organization. The Victims Assistant Fund, administered by Washburn’s Student Life office, provides emergency funding to help students leave or avoid situations that create a challenging environment for completing their degree.
Before the COVID-19 crisis began, WSGA had allocated the money to serve as a cushion for next year’s budget, but knowing many of their fellow students had been laid off or had their work hours cut, they knew the money would be best used now.
“This is a difficult time for all of us. In the midst of this, life is still going on and bills need to be paid,” said Victoria Smith, president of WSGA. “We are trying to do everything in our power to help students and hoping to further spread hope and love. We are going to come out of this stronger than ever, and we cannot wait to see everyone back on campus.”
