Topeka, Kan. – Five student athletes at Washburn University tested positive this week for COVID-19, according to the university.  The infected players have been asked to self-isolate for two weeks. Those who were in contact with the athletes have been notified.  Most of the players who did test positive had not shown any symptoms.  None of the student athletes were living on campus.

All student athletes, coaches and athletic staff have been following strict guidelines mandating social distancing and the use of face masks. Those guidelines were put in place when the university made face masks mandatory on July 13, 2020.  What’s more, staff in the athletic facilities are disinfecting equipment and encouraging the frequent use of hand sanitizer.

Most of the student athletes are not back on campus at this point since the MIAA Athletic Conference has delayed the start of any sports season until September 28 with practices to start no earlier than August 31.

The university is working with the Shawnee County Health Department to establish reporting procedures for anyone showing symptoms or who tests positive for COVID-19.  Those procedures will be in place prior to the return of students starting August 11.  The priority of the university is the safety of students, faculty and staff and has mandated the use of masks and social distancing.  Additionally, most classes will be offered in a hybrid and remote formats so individuals unable to attend a class in person can still participate via distance learning systems.
