Topeka, Kan. – The American Advertising Federation (AAF) honored Washburn University student Christina Noland’s work with a National Student Silver ADDY Award. Noland won in the direct marketing category for her Pizza Carte promo playing cards project. The American Advertising Awards is the advertising industry's largest and most representative competition, attracting nearly 35,000 entries every year in local American Advertising Federation competitions.

“Awards like this highlight the exceptional talent of our students, this one most especially Ms. Noland’s knowledge and skills,” said Dr. Maria Stover, professor and chair of the mass media department. “Our faculty encourages students to put the knowledge they gain in the classroom into practice through internships and entering contests like this, it helps prepare them to enter the mass media industry. It also demonstrates the quality education our students receive at Washburn.”

Noland was first introduced to the ADDYs in 2016 and she made it her goal then to prove that she was among the best at Washburn and her peers nationally.

“I began my academic journey at Washburn Tech where I was taking a graphic design class and that professor, Pam Manning, encouraged me to enter the local ADDYs,” said Noland. “I won a gold medal in illustration and a silver in logo design at the local level that year, and that’s when I decided I wanted to develop the skills to create a project that would get national attention.”

“I also met Dr. Anglin who teaches advertising at Washburn University at the Topeka ADDY awards that year. Talking about different career options that fit within my interests is why I made the switch to the Washburn University campus and became a creative advertising major.”

Conducted annually by the AAF, the local tier is the first of a three-tier, national competition. Concurrently, across the country, local entrants vie to receive an ADDY Award—recognition as the very best in their markets. At the second tier, local ADDY winners compete against winners from other local clubs in one of 15 district competitions. District ADDY winners are then forwarded to the third tier, the national stage of the American Advertising Awards. The Student Division of the American Advertising Awards competition, sponsored by the AAF is a unique national awards program designed especially for college students, structured like the professional competition. Applicants must be enrolled full- or part-time in an accredited U.S. educational institution.

Since 2016, Noland has won 15 medals across several categories at the local and district levels before achieving this national recognition. Upon graduations, she hopes to work in an advertising agency as a graphic designer.

Established in 1905, the AAF includes members across all disciplines and career levels in advertising. Headquartered in Washington, DC, the AAF views themselves as the “Unifying Voice for Advertising.” The AAF has more than 200 local clubs across the U.S. representing nearly 40,000 advertising professionals, connecting and leading the industry. They help more than 5,000 college chapter members kickstart their careers with a 200+ college chapter network and an array of student programs.
