WHAT: Washburn University is hosting a virtual lecture with Harriet Washington, author of “A Terrible Thing to Waste: Environmental Racism and Its Assault on the American Mind.” A panel discussion will follow. Dr. Laura Murphy from Washburn University’s Department of Sociology and Anthropology will moderate and panelists include Dr. Valerie Padilla Carrol from the Department of Gender, Women and Sexuality Studies at Kansas State University and Dr. Dan Wildcat (Yuchee Creek) from the department of Indigenous and American Indian Studies at Haskell Indian Nations University.
WHEN: February 18, 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.
WHERE: It will stream at www.youtube.com/washburnvideo
DETAILS: In addition to giving an abundance of historic information on ‘scientific racism,’ she paints a powerful and disturbing portrait of medicine, race, sex, and the abuse of power by telling individual human stories. Washington also makes the case for broader political consciousness of science and technology, challenging audiences to see the world differently and challenge established paradigms in the history of medicine. This event is part of Black History Month and Washburn University’s WUmester events. It is sponsored by the Washburn University Office of Academic Affairs, Office of Diversity and Inclusion, the Campus Activity Board, and the following departments: Biology, Chemistry, Communication Studies, English, History, Psychology, Philosophy and Religious Studies, Political Science and Public Administration, and Sociology and Anthropology.
