Topeka, Kan. – Washburn University’s Mulvane Art Museum is pleased to announce the recent donation of a significant collection of photographs featuring the works of ten photographers of note: Ralph Gibson, Larry Fink, Walter Iooss, Kristin Capp, Donna Ferrato, Joyce Tenneson, Sally Gall, Alan MacWeeney, David Seltzer and Raphael Mazzaco. The donation was facilitated by Summit Art Advisory (SSA), Kearny, N.J. SSA works closely with artists, dealers, auction houses, galleries, and other fine art institutions and specializes in the management of art collections.
The Mulvane Art Museum currently houses more than 6,000 works of art in its collection and this donation further strengthens the works on paper portion of its holdings.
“The museum’s acquisition of Brian Lanker’s ‘I Dream a World: Portraits of Black Women Who Changed America’ photographs in 2019 opened the door to building a complete photography collection,” said Connie Gibbons, director of the Mulvane Art Museum. “These photographers exemplify some of the best work being done in photography.”
Widely viewed as one of the greatest sports photographers of our time, Walter Iooss, Jr.’s photos have graced the pages of Sports Illustrated, including more than 300 covers. Iooss has photographed some of the most recognized athletes in sports history, including Muhammad Ali, Michael Jordan, Lebron James, Serena Williams, Tiger Woods, and hundreds more. Dubbed ‘the Rembrandt of sports photography,’ Iooss was inducted into the Photography Hall of Fame in 2018.
Internationally lauded as one of the leading photographers of her generation, Joyce Tenneson’s work has been published in books and major magazines, and exhibited in museums and galleries worldwide. Her luminous and unique 20x24 inch Polaroid, Ilfochrome and vintage gelatin silver prints emanate a poignant mystical sensibility. Tenneson's photography has been shown in over 150 exhibitions worldwide, and is included in numerous private and museum collections. Tenneson’s photographs have appeared on countless magazine covers, including Time, Life, Entertainment Weekly, Newsweek, Premiere, Esquire and The New York Times Magazine.
Photographer Larry Fink is known for his black-and-white images of American society. His work has been exhibited at and collected by the Museum of Modern Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art, among others, and he was the recipient of two Guggenheim Fellowships. Fink's best-known work is Social Graces, a series of photographs he produced in the 1970s that depicted and contrasted wealthy Manhattanites at fashionable clubs and social events alongside working-class people from rural America.
The Mulvane Art Museum, located at 17th and Jewell on the Washburn University campus, is currently open on Tuesdays 12 p.m. to 7 p.m., and Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is FREE.
