Topeka, Kan. - Washburn University Debate placed first at the Penn State University Debate tournament in Lincoln-Douglas sweeps this past weekend, Feb. 26 - 27. Tournaments are virtual currently due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Seven of the nine Washburn debaters qualified to elimination rounds in this highly competitive tournament.

Tournament results:

- Zach Wallentine (senior) finished as the tournament runner-up narrowly losing to Lewis & Clark on a 2-1 decision in the Finals.
- Cade Blenden (freshman) and Daniel Archer (sophomore) finished as semifinalist (Final Four).
- Carlos Cedillo-Silva (junior), Jenna Gorton (junior) and Andrew Rea (freshman) finished as a Quarter finalist (Elite 8).
- Jacob Bailes (freshman) finished as an Octafinalists (Sweet 16).

     Washburn debaters who competed this weekend are: Zach Wallentine (senior), Jenna Gorton (junior), Carlos Cedillo-Silva (junior), Daniel Archer (sophomore), Logan Michael (sophomore), Andrew Rea (freshman), Cade Blenden (freshman), Hunter Squires (freshman) and Jacob Bailes (freshman). This was the Washburn debate team’s last regular season tournament. All nine Washburn debate team members have qualified to compete in the two national tournaments in March and April.  

     Other universities that participated in this tournament are Central Michigan University, John Carroll University, Kansas State University, Lewis & Clark University, Northern Iowa University, North Texas University, Penn State University, Sacramento State University, University of Nebraska at Lincoln and Whitman University

     Linclon-Douglas, or LD, debate is a debate format that follows the basic time schedule 6 - 3 - 7 - 3 - 4 - 6 - 3. Each debater gets thirteen minutes of total speaking time, and three minutes of question time. The rounds take approximately 45 minutes in total. Each debater receives four to five minutes of preparation time to use between speeches however they like.
