Topeka, Kan. – Dr. Shane Van Dalsem, associate professor of finance business at Washburn University, is this year’s recipient of the Kaw Valley Bank Award in Research Excellence. Van Dalsem was chosen by a committee in the School of Business made up of faculty currently holding an endowed professorship and past award recipients.

Faculty in the Washburn School of Business do a variety of research activities alongside teaching. Research projects help a faculty member stay current in their field, creates the opportunity for intellectual exchange among faculty members and students and often provides important insights for business organizations and the general public as a whole. Fifteen years ago, Kaw Valley Bank took notice of these projects and stepped up to support an annual award to recognize outstanding research. Kaw Valley Bank also provides the resources to support the Washburn School of Business Working Paper Series and bi-weekly Business Research Seminar Series.

Van Dalsem’s research focuses on finance. In the last five years, he published six peer-reviewed journal articles, many of which were published in significant journals. He has published 15 scholarly articles and cases in total during his career. Van Dalsem research topics include non-profits, family firms and repurchase activity. This year’s Kaw Valley Award committee noted that his research work displays his ability to generate interesting and relevant topics for investigation while addressing real-world issues, reduce complex information and tailor the results for the background and interests of his audience.

Before accepting his position at Washburn University in 2015, Van Dalsem worked at the University of Wisconsin at La Crosse for eight years. He teaches investment, corporate finance, applied portfolio management and financial strategies. Dalsem obtained a bachelor’s of science degree from Missouri Southern State University, a master business administration degree from Kansas State University and his Ph.D. in philosophy from the University of Arkansas.
