Topeka, Kan. – Washburn University announced today that Dr. Matt Arterburn will be the interim dean for the College of Arts and Sciences — the largest academic unit of the university representing about half of the student body. Arterburn is replacing Dean Laura Stephenson who was named the interim vice president of academic affairs earlier this month. Arterburn is currently associate dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, as well as a professor of biology.
Arterburn earned a bachelor’s degree in biology from George Mason University and a doctorate in genetics and cell biology with a focus on plant breeding and cytogenetics from Washington State University. He joined Washburn in 2006 as an assistant professor in biology, received tenure in 2012 and was promoted to full professor in 2019. He has served as an associate dean of the College of Arts and Sciences since 2014, where he has worked on a variety of initiatives.
