Topeka, Kan. – Open the door to opportunities at the Washburn Tech East Open House from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 4 at 2014 SE Washington. Guests may tour the facility while learning about academic and technical programs offered. The come-and-go event also will feature free food and the chance to connect with business and industry partners as well as community resource organizations.
Washburn Tech East officially began serving the community in June 2019. It offers several programs including CDL, Electrical Technology (evenings), Adult Education programs (GED/ESL), Healthcare Pathway, Industrial Production Technician and Plumbing (new, August 2022). Accelerating Opportunities – Kansas or AO-K also is offered at Washburn Tech East. Developed by the Kansas Board of Regents in partnership with the Kansas Department of Commerce, the program allows students to earn a Kansas High School Diploma and acquire technical training at the same time for little to no cost.
“Washburn Tech East is a testament to Washburn University’s commitment to creating equitable access to technical training and higher education in collaboration with GO Topeka,” said Dr. Mike Strohschein, dean, Washburn Tech.
Washburn University and Washburn Tech, in partnership with GO Topeka, the Joint Economic Development Organization (JEDO) and the East Topeka community, opened Washburn Tech East in response to a market research study that confirmed the need for an educational facility in the area. The project was initially funded by a $5.5 million grant from GO Topeka/JEDO. An advisory council comprised of local stakeholders helps to guide the facility’s role in the community and the educational services it provides.
