Topeka, Kan. – Washburn University’s Mulvane Art Museum's ArtLab - an innovative center for hands-on arts education - will reopen Saturday, Aug. 6. The ArtLab will be open to the public on Tuesdays from 4 p.m. – 7 p.m. and Saturday afternoons from 12 p.m.– 4 p.m. The ArtLab has been closed due to the pandemic.

Additionally, the ArtLab will be open for private educational group tours on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Tours must be scheduled in advance and are limited to 30 participants. Groups may schedule a morning (starting 10 a.m.) or afternoon (starting 1 p.m.) session. To schedule a private group tour in advance, please email the Mulvane Art Museum’s Education Curator, Jonathan Matteson, or call the museum office at 785-670-1124. Please include the ages and number of participants with your information (minors must be accompanied by an adult).

The Mulvane Art Museum's ArtLab recently conducted a national search to find an Education Curator and has hired Jonathan Matteson. He has a decade of experience working in museum and gallery programming and education, having taught at both public and private schools. Matteson has a bachelor of fine arts in studio art from Washington State University and a master of fine arts in studio art from the University of Idaho.

"As a curator of education," Matteson states, "I will facilitate learning, particularly formal and non-formal art appreciation, while conducting outreaches that are fun and fascinating for all who participate."
