Topeka, Kan. –  The Washburn University communication studies department hosted the biannual Nall Speak Off Wednesday, Nov. 9. Each semester some of the top students in the public speaking classes (CN 150) are nominated to showcase their talents at this celebration of informative public speech. The culminating round of this event is open to the Washburn and surrounding communities.

     The Fall 2022 Nall Speak Off participants were Ben Amen, Alea Brian (from Seaman High School), Lucas Cave, Abigail Fox, Jesse Ingram, Kaylynn Kramer, Matt Kucharezyk and Tyler Smith.

The top six placing participants and their topics were as follows:

1. Ben Amen – Yellowstone wolves
2. Tyler Smith - Doppelgangers
3. Abigail Fox – The evolution of Halloween
4. Alea Brian – Behavior charts
5. Lucas Cave – Comprehensive sex education
6. Kaylynn Kramer – Mental health awareness

     

       The Nall Speak Off was adjudicated by a panel of three people – two Washburn University faculty members and a student: Dr. Jeffrey Jackson, interim dean of the Washburn University School of Law, Dr. Tracy Routsong, professor in communication studies and assistant dean of the Washburn University College of Arts and Sciences, and Logan Michael, current Washburn student and former winner of the Nall Speak Off.
