Topeka, Kan. – The Washburn University music and theatre department will host the annual Capital City Marching Band Festival October 4 in Yager Stadium. The festival will feature approximately 1,000 students and their directors from eight Kansas high schools: Highland Park High School, Holton High School, Leavenworth High School, Royal Valley High School, Seaman High School, Shawnee Heights High School, Topeka High School and Topeka West High School. The public is welcome.
When: 5 – 8 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 4
Where: Yager Stadium on the Washburn University campus
Admission: Adults $10, Students/Children $5, Cash only. Children 2 and under are free (All proceeds go to supporting the Washburn University Marching Band program.)

Dr. Mark Bonner, Jr. will be judging music general effect, Dr. Bill Thomas will be judging music ensemble, Steve Vento will be judging visual general effect, Dr. Melissa Sawyer will be judging visual ensemble, Lindsey Vento will be judging the color guard and Christopher Exum will be judging percussion. Gates open at 5 p.m. and awards will be presented at 8 p.m.
“Holding this competition allows younger performers in our community to exhibit their talent closer to home and it allows us to showcase the programs and facilities at Washburn University,” said Anya Pogorelova, lecturer and interim director of bands for Washburn University. “The Washburn University Marching Band students, many of whom graduated from these high schools, really look forward to welcoming their former classmates and band directors to our campus.”
