Topeka, Kan. – One hundred and twenty-six high school students will take their passion for art to the next level when they attend the annual Washburn University High School Art Day. These students will attend five art workshops, chosen from a wide variety of topics, taught by Washburn art faculty, alumni and advanced Washburn University art education students. This event is hosted by the Washburn University art department. The workshops are open to pre-registered students only.

In conjunction with High School Art Day, these students enter one piece of artwork each in the juried High School Art Day Student exhibition from Oct. 27- Nov. 3 in the art gallery of the Washburn University Art Building.  The exhibition is available to view while the Art Building is open, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. A reception will be held 5 – 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 1. The exhibition and reception are free and are open to the public.

“High School Art Day and participating in an exhibition gives high school students the opportunity to experience what a college art department is like, specifically at Washburn,” said Deena Amont, Catron Art Educator and public outreach lecturer for the Washburn University art department. “It’s an opportunity to think about other possibilities in their craft and how they want to grow their talents.”

Students will check in at 8 a.m. and workshops begins at 9 a.m. Morning workshops will begin at 9, 10 and 11 a.m. before lunch at 12 p.m. The lunch and awards ceremony will take place from 12 -1 p.m. in Washburn Rooms A and B, in the Memorial Union.  Kyra Miller, Washburn University class of 2020, a successful studio artist, will be the featured speaker. Art exhibit winners will receive awards and certificates and two scholarships to Washburn will be awarded.  The two afternoon workshops begin at 1 and 2 p.m.

The 126 students registered represent 22 high schools, mostly from about a 60-mile radius.  Seven schools are from Shawnee County: Shawnee Heights High School, Washburn Rural High School, Topeka High School, Topeka West High School, Seaman High School, Rossville High School and Cornerstone home school.  Of the students attending, about 70% are seniors and 20% are juniors.

This event is sponsored by the Washburn University art department, the Friends of Mabee Library, the Washburn University College of Arts and Sciences, Washburn University Admissions, the Ichabod Shop,

Washburn University Center for Student Success and Retention and Washburn’s Mulvane Art Museum.
