Topeka, Kan. – The Washburn University communication studies department hosted the biannual Nall Speak Off Wednesday, Nov. 8. Each semester some of the top students in the public speaking classes (CN 150) are nominated to showcase their talents at this celebration of informative public speech. The culminating round of this event is open to the Washburn and surrounding communities.
The Fall 2023 Nall Speak Off participants were Daniel Alamilla, Cinai Anderson, Mohammad Asfaque, Quinn Earwood, Mason Fair, Alyssa Hannigan, Maddie Herken, DeMarques Hinds, Ziona Jackson (Topeka West High School) and Adisyn Stofer.
The top six placing students and their topics were as follows:
1. Mason Fair – My Tennis Bag2. Ziona Jackson – Bricks
3. Adisyn Stofer – Scar Tissue
4. Mohammad Asfaque – TikTok
5. Daniel Alamilla – Effects of Pets on Mental Health
6. Maddie Herken – 4th of July
The Nall Speak Off was adjudicated by a panel of three: Heather Center, interim director of student accommodations, Kathy Pflaum, director of purchasing, and Jenna Gorton, graduate assistant for the Washburn debate team.
