Topeka, Kan. – The Washburn University department of music and theatre will host performances throughout April featuring music students and faculty. The majority of these concerts are on the Washburn University campus, they are free and they are open to the public.

Washburn University Band Concert  
Date and Time: 7:30 p.m. Monday, April 1
Location: White Concert Hall

The full Washburn University band will perform their spring concert.

 

Coleman Hawkins Jazz Festival and Concert

Date and Time: 4:30 p.m. Friday, April 5
Location: White Concert Hall

The Washburn University Department of Music and Theatre will host more than 13 bands from 10 high schools at this annual jazz festival. The day will conclude with an evening concert at 4:30 p.m. that will feature the guest clinicians, the Washburn Faculty Jazz Quintet and the Washburn Jazz Orchestra.

 

Washburn Honors Chamber Concert

The Honors Chamber Concert will feature student musicians in the Fetter String Quartet, Honors Brass Trio and Honors Woodwind Quintet.

 

Washburn Faculty Brass Quintet Recital
Date and Time: 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 9
Location: Carole Chapel

The Washburn Faculty Brass Quintet will perform a recital in Carole Chapel. The group features Dr. Bryce Call, trumpet, Professor Andrea Stanton, horn, Professor Andrew Hakenewerth, trombone, and Dr. Taylor Hicks, tuba. They will be joined by Washburn alum Dalton Imhoff-Brey on trumpet. The repertoire for the evening includes works by J.S. Bach, Benjamin Britten and Kevin McKee, among others.

 

Washburn Piano and Organ Society Gala
Date and Time: 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 12
Location: White Concert Hall

This concert features current Washburn keyboard students as well as the highest-performing students who participated in Washburn’s annual Washburn Piano Day. The guest students include performers from grades 1 through 12. This concert will showcase the repertoire achievements by current students, as well as provide formal performance opportunities for local students on the stage of venerable White Concert Hall.

Dr. Zsolt Eder, Washburn violin professor, and Dr. Lucy Tan, Washburn piano professor, will perform together.

 

Debora Silva Junior Violin Concert

Debora Silva, a Washburn University student, will perform her junior year violin recital.

 

Washburn Wind Ensemble

Caroline Shipley Senior Cello Recital

The Washburn Faculty Jazz Quintet will perform a recital in White Concert Hall. The group features Dr. Craig Treinen, saxophone, Dr. Bryce Call, trumpet, Dr. Von Hansen, drums, Professor Bill McKemy, bass, and Professor Tetsuya Nishiyama, guitar. This performance will consist of a variety of jazz standards.

 

Mia Stricklin Senior Flute Recital

Mia Stricklin, a Washburn University student, will perform her senior flute recital.

 

Percussion Picnic
Date and Time: 3 p.m. Sunday, April 21
Location: Outside between Memorial Union and Mulvane Art Museum

Washburn is thrilled to announce the upcoming outdoor concert, "Percussion Picnic," presented by the Washburn University Percussion Group, set against the picturesque backdrop of the Washburn lawn outside the Mulvane Art Museum. The concert promises an enchanting musical experience inspired by the Kansas outdoor environment, featuring captivating pieces such as "Watercolor Sunset," "Lyric Dusk" and "Swarm."

Attendees are encouraged to bring their chairs and embrace the picnic atmosphere while immersing themselves in the rhythmic melodies that mirror the beauty of the Kansas outdoors. The unique combination of talented percussionists and the serene outdoor setting ensures a delightful evening for all.
