Topeka, Kan. – A community celebration is the best medicine for marking a half century of nursing education at Washburn University. The public is invited to attend an open house and showcase in honor of the 50th anniversary of Washburn’s School of Nursing 4-6 p.m. Friday, May 3, in the Petro Allied Health Center on the Washburn campus.
“Washburn nursing graduates serve as the core of health care providers in Northeast Kansas, and we are so proud to honor and continue this legacy,” said Dr. Jane Carpenter, dean, Washburn University School of Nursing. “Throughout 2024, we are hosting several events that recognize the vital role Washburn nurses play in our communities as well as the exciting future that lies ahead.”
The May event will feature many interactive opportunities including tours of the Washburn mobile health clinic, a kid’s station with hands-on activities, demonstrations in learning and simulation labs plus a photo booth and refreshments. In addition, alumni will enjoy opportunities to share memories of Washburn’s School of Nursing and view posters created by current students.
“We want to create a fun event that alumni, friends and the community can enjoy alongside current students, faculty and staff,” said Lori Edwards, associate professor of nursing, Washburn University, and co-chair of 50th anniversary committee. “This is an important milestone for Washburn and our community, and we are looking forward to reconnecting with other alumni and former students as we celebrate the special place that is Washburn.”
Registration for the May 3 event is encouraged through the Washburn University Alumni Association and Foundation, but the event is free to attend and open to the public. Organizers ask those attending the event to bring canned goods, non-perishables and/or personal hygiene items to help stock the Bods Feeding Bods Food and Commodities Pantry which benefits students at Washburn University and Washburn Tech.
A more formal celebration honoring the Washburn School of Nursing’s 50th anniversary is scheduled for Saturday, September 28. Details will be released as the event approaches.
