Washburn University’s Annual Coleman Hawkins Summer Jazz Camp Offers Free Daily Concerts June 2–7

      Topeka, Kan. – The public is invited to attend free daily concerts at the annual Washburn University Coleman Hawkins Summer Jazz Camp. Nationally recognized jazz musicians and educators will perform 7–8 p.m., June 2–6 in the choir room (room 143) of the Garvey Fine Arts Center. Students attending the camp will perform 2–3:30 p.m., June 7 in White Concert Hall. These concerts are all on Washburn’s campus. Students must have previously registered for this camp to attend.

      The Washburn University Department of Music and Theatre will host more than 40 jazz musicians in grades 7th through 12th at the camp. These young jazz enthusiasts will have the opportunity to play with and learn from some of the finest jazz musicians and educators in the country, including Dr. Bryce Call (trumpet), assistant professor at Washburn, Trevor Turla (trombone), musician, composer and producer based in Kansas City, Mo., Keith Mallory (drums), musician based in Lawrence, Kan. and former adjunct instructor at Ottawa University, Tetsuya Nishiyama (guitar), adjunct professor at Washburn, Ben Tervort (bass), musician based in Kansas City, Mo. and member of the Pete Fucinaro Trio, Brant Jester (piano), musician based in Kansas City, Mo. and former pianist of the Missouri Jazz Orchestra, and Dr. Craig Treinen (saxophone), department chair and director of jazz studies and applied saxophone at Washburn.

      The camp includes jazz combos, master classes, jazz history, student practice sessions and artist lectures. Most of the campers have elected to stay in resident facilities on campus for an immersive experience.  

      “The Washburn University Coleman Hawkins Summer Jazz Camp provides an opportunity for young musicians to interact with professional jazz artists each day,” said Treinen. “Our clinicians focus on student development, small group playing and improvisational techniques that are associated with the jazz idiom. Students have a great time playing together and being a part of a great learning environment.”
