Topeka, Kan.Seeing is believing and that is the premise behind the Washburn University Institute of Technology (Washburn Tech) Fall Open House from 8:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 16, at 5724 SW Huntoon St. The come-and-go event is an opportunity for prospective students, friends and family to learn about training opportunities that can lead to career opportunities. A Program Fair will take place in the Conference Center throughout the day, with student-led tours beginning every 15 minutes from 8:30 to 9:45 a.m., and from 12 to 1:30 p.m.

“Washburn Tech’s more than 30 career programs provide hands-on, interactive learning. Our Open House will give prospective students a chance to see our instructors, labs and classrooms in action,” said Scott Smathers, dean, Washburn Tech. “We welcome the public as this event gives everyone a chance to interact with our students and learn what Washburn Tech offers. It is an exciting time for students to gain the knowledge and skills that are desperately needed by business and industry.”

Tech’s Open House comes on the heels of a big incline in adult students, which is music to the ears of local employers. Postsecondary or adult enrollment increased 25% for the current fall semester, while the number of high school students held strong.

“Washburn Tech is the perfect institution to gain the required skills that make you day one employable after graduation,” said Steven Vickery, sr. talent acquisition partner – manufacturing, Mars Global Services. “Washburn Tech students, both high school and postsecondary, are highly trained, highly skilled and highly sought after by all companies in manufacturing. Mars is proud to partner with Washburn Tech and thrilled to see their enrollment growth.”

The Fall Open House is free and open to the public. Visitors may arrive at any time during event hours and are not required to register, but large groups are encouraged to RSVP to the Washburn Tech Admissions Office at 785.670.2200 or email visittech@washburn.edu.
