Topeka, Kan. – The Washburn University Theatre will present “Carrie: The Musical” by Lawrence D. Cohen, music by Michael Gore, lyrics by Dean Pitchford, and based on the novel by Stephen King. The cast will perform at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 31, Nov. 1, 2, 8, 9 and at 2 p.m. Nov. 10 in the Neese-Gray Theatre in the Garvey Fine Arts Center, on the Washburn University campus. Tickets are a suggested $10.
The musical follows an awkward teenage girl, Carrie White, and the horror of her bullying and abuse. Her classmates push her to the edge of a tenuous situation and lead to lessons for those who are left in the wake of revenge.
“Carrie: The Musical” is directed by Julie Noonan, with music direction by Joesph DeSota, choreography by Sally Glassman, set design by Ted Shonka and costume design by Knox McClendon. The cast features Lauren Szala, Ace Braden, Abby Strella, Jaxon Schroeder, Lilia Potter, Lynn Morford, Caroline Scarbrough, Braun Teter, Emma Jarvis, Teranique Symonette, Ruby Johnson, Shelton Brynes, Sam Revel, Matthew Rice, and ensemble members Lauren Province, Madison Sharp, Beetle Hatch, Gary Jensen, Clayton Smith, Bella Coyle and Lauren Pryor. This is the second show of Washburn’s 2024-2025 season.
“This year is the 50th anniversary of the Stephen King novel that launched his career. The subsequent film lingers in many peoples’ memories, “stated Noonan. “This musical takes those sources and personalizes it for a contemporary audience, many of whom are still dealing with the same kinds of issues in school. Carrie has her own special powers that add a special danger to this toxic situation. The performers are excited to share the lessons and the terrors this musical offers.”
To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the King novel and Halloween weekend, audience members are invited to come in costume, especially prom attire!
