Topeka, Kan. – Get into the holiday spirit by joining the 11th annual Toys for Tots Toy Build 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 6 in Building K at Washburn University Institute of Technology (Washburn Tech) at 5724 SW Huntoon.
Washburn Tech invites community members of all ages and employees of area businesses to volunteer a bit of their time to build toys for children in the community. Washburn Tech students and staff lead the charge and are among the 500 volunteers who work a combined 1,000 hours to make hundreds of wooden toys to be distributed in 15 Northeast Kansas counties through Toys for Tots.
“This year we’re going to build hobby horses and step stools. The goal is to build 700 handmade toys,” said John Lemon, construction project manager, Washburn University. “It only takes about 15 minutes to paint one toy, and it’s a great feeling to give back.”
Any person or business who would like to donate materials for future builds are encouraged to contact Lemon at john.lemon@washburn.edu. “With your continued support in the way of donations we can continue to provide the experience of building toys and working with the many people who look forward to this day every year,” Lemon said.
