Topeka, Kan. – Washburn University will host 486 high school and middle school students Jan. 29 for the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) Kansas District VII conference. This is Washburn’s second year welcoming this conference to campus.
Students compete in a variety of scenario-based, case study role-play presentations: banking and business systems, business management, client service, entrepreneurship, hospitality and event management, impromptu speaking, international business, management information systems, marketing, network design, parliamentary procedures and sports and entertainment management. Students can compete individually or in teams of two to three students
“We are pleased to host these students and their teachers as they compete in the FBLA conference. The key to life-long success involves being able to present oneself and your ideas, and this competition gives students that experience in a professional environment,” said Dr. David Sollars, dean, Washburn School of Business.
Sollars and Dr. Alan Bearman, vice president of strategic enrollment management, Washburn, will speak to the students from 67 high schools and four middle schools during the morning session.
The district conference provides students an opportunity to present, many for the first time, and learn what they need to improve upon in hopes of making it to the finals at the FBLA state conference. All students attending the district conference are eligible to compete at the state conference, and the top four at the state conference will qualify for the FBLA national conference in the summer. The FBLA state conference will be held in Topeka at the Stormont-Vail Events Center March 31-April 1, it is also the second year in a row in Topeka for the state conference.
