Topeka, Kan. — The Robert J. Dole Center for Law & Government at Washburn University School of Law, in partnership with New America, will present “Fusion Voting in Kansas: Past, Present & Future” from 2-6 p.m. March 6 in Robert J. Dole Hall, Washburn University School of Law. This timely event will explore the history, legal implications and potential impact of fusion voting in Kansas, as well as its relevance to the current political landscape.

Fusion voting, once a common feature of the American electoral system, allows multiple political parties to nominate the same candidate, giving voters greater flexibility and influence in elections. With a legal challenge currently underway to revive fusion voting in Kansas, this event provides an opportunity to reflect on its significance for voters and policymakers in the state.

The event will feature a distinguished lineup of speakers, including Bill Kristol, Editor-at-Large of The Bulwark; Don Hineman, Former Kansas House Majority Leader; and the Honorable Deanell Tacha, retired United States Circuit Judge for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit. Panels will examine how fusion voting has historically shaped political landscapes, the role it could play in Kansas today and the constitutional rights at stake in the ongoing legal challenge.

“This event offers a unique opportunity for students, legal professionals, policymakers and the public to engage in a thoughtful discussion about an important electoral issue,” said Jeffrey Jackson, dean of Washburn University School of Law. “With such a diverse panel of experts, we anticipate an engaging conversation on how fusion voting could reshape Kansas politics and governance.”

In addition to the two panel discussions, the event will also include a reception, providing attendees an opportunity to network and discuss the day’s insights.
