Topeka, Kan. - The Washburn University Center for Student Success and Retention (CSSR) announces the induction of 79 students into Alpha Alpha Alpha, or Tri-Alpha, a national honor society distinguishing first-generation academic success. New Alpha Alpha Alpha members will be sworn into the society and awarded a pin and certificate of membership at this spring's induction ceremony at 2 p.m. March 30, in the Bradbury Thompson Alumni Center. Washburn’s Chi chapter is among the society’s first 25 chapters, and Washburn is the first institution in Kansas to charter a chapter.
To be eligible to join Alpha Alpha Alpha, first-generation students must be currently enrolled with a minimum of 30 credit hours completed toward an undergraduate degree program at the university, have a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher and neither of the student's parents, step-parents, or legal guardians, have completed a bachelor's degree.
Washburn Vice-President for Strategic Enrollment Management and Student Success Dr. Alan Bearman stated, “Celebrating the success of all Washburn students is important. In this instance we are pleased to see some of our highest achieving first-generation students join a widely respected national honor society because it is a sign of how their hard work is paying off.”
Founded in 2018, Alpha Alpha Alpha Honor Society partners with colleges and universities to celebrate the scholarship and leadership of first-generation students in higher education. Alpha Alpha Alpha encourages and rewards academic excellence among first-generation college students pursuing an associate or bachelor’s degree in accredited institutions of higher learning.
Washburn University created the CSSR in July 2011 in order to better support the successful transition of students into and through their first year of studies. The CSSR and the initiatives that come out of it are changing success outcomes well beyond the first year for Washburn students.
