
Topeka, Kan. – The Washburn University communication studies department hosted the biannual Nall Speak Off Wednesday, April 9. Each semester some of the top students in the public speaking classes (CN 150) are nominated to showcase their talents at this celebration of informative public speech. The culminating round of this event is open to the Washburn and surrounding communities.
The Spring 2025 Nall Speak Off participants were Erin Beck, Jennifer Baurley, Angelina Castenada, Brady Clark, Eva Diaz, Kate Dolan, Zach Griffin, Rowan Kelpin, Connor Ockree, Ava Petry, Sarah Pettis and Caroline Scarbrough.
The top six placing students and their topics are as follows:
Rowan Kelpin – Martial Arts
Kate Dolan – Social Media and Athletics
Caroline Scarbrough – Hand Lettering
Connor Ockree – Dungeons and Dragons
Zach Griffin – Vaccinations
Ava Petry – Fast Fashion
The Nall Speak Off was adjudicated by a panel of three from Washburn University: Logan Michael, Washburn University debate team alumnus and previous winner of the Nall Speak Off, Heather Popejoy, director of student accessibility services, and Dr. John Fritch, provost and vice president for academic affairs.
