Topeka, Kan – Boys may have Friday night lights, but now girls have “Sunday Night Lights” at Washburn University. Ichabod Football is hosting its first female flag football team camp from 3:30 – 8:30 p.m. Sunday, June 8.
The camp, for high school teams only, plays on the growing popularity of the sport, fueled by inclusion in the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles as well as support from organizations such as the National Football League (NFL). Recent numbers indicate half a million girls, ages 6-17, play the sport which is a 63% increase in the last five years.
“Our staff quickly identified the trend of female flag football, wanting to help it grow and give these athletes the recognition they deserve for competing in the sport we love, football,” said Zach Watkins, head coach, Washburn University Football. “Male athletes have numerous football camp options, so we wanted to be among the first to provide an option for females.”
Ten teams are already registered for the camp with many more expected. Athletes will utilize both Yager Stadium and the Indoor Athletic Facility at Washburn. Several universities, including NCAA and NAIA institutions, have women’s flag football programs. “Sunday Night Lights” gives high school athletes the opportunity to showcase their skills in front of college coaches looking to recruit them.
“Besides exposure for these athletes, this camp is about building a sense of sisterhood, recognizing the hard work and dedication of young women in the sport and giving them a space to shine - something they’ve long deserved,” said Ross Sharp, assistant coach and director of player personnel, Washburn University Football.
