New Nursing Dean

Topeka, Kan. – Washburn University is pleased to announce Dr. Crystal Stevens, interim dean of the Washburn University Harmony J. Hines School of Nursing, will assume the role permanently.

“Dr. Stevens is a proven, effective leader whose passion for nursing education is matched only by her deep commitment to Washburn and the success of our students,” said Dr. Juliann Mazachek, president, Washburn University. “Her strong relationships with the regional healthcare community make her the ideal person to continue the vital work of preparing highly skilled, compassionate nurses to care for our communities while meeting workforce needs.”

Stevens, who became interim dean last summer, began her career at Washburn University 20 years ago as an adjunct faculty member. Over the years, she has shaped and guided countless students - most recently, teaching in the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program, where she coordinated the Level 3 Acute Care Medical Surgical course and the Level 4 Capstone course.

“I am extremely honored to lead the Washburn University Harmony J. Hines School of Nursing,” Stevens said. “For two decades, I have had the privilege of working alongside extraordinary faculty as they prepare students to serve our communities with excellence and empathy. I am profoundly grateful to lead this meaningful work and be part of such a special institution.”

Stevens earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from Emporia State University in 2003. In 2007, she graduated from Washburn University with her Master of Science in Nursing degree as an Adult Nurse Practitioner and earned her Doctor of Nursing Practice Degree from Washburn in 2019.

Stevens replaces Dr. Jane Carpenter, who retired as dean of the Harmony J. Hines School of Nursing in June.
