Washburn University’s Kappa Sigma Fraternity to give money in support of local veterans
Topeka, Kan. – Service for Washburn’s Kappa Sigma fraternity means supporting those who serve our country. The chapter plans three check presentations to veteran’s organizations at 3 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 19 in front of Morgan Hall on the Washburn University campus.
Kappa Sigma hosts multiple fundraisers throughout the year, including the Military Heroes Gala in the fall. With the help of community partners, such as Interim Health, the gala raised $3,000 that will be shared among American Legion Post 400, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1650 and the Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association in Topeka.
“For nearly 20 years, Kappa Sigma has been committed to supporting veterans who have given so much in service to our country,” said Keegan Sharp, president, Kappa Sigma, Washburn University. “After putting their safety and time with family on the line to protect our freedoms, many return home facing challenges such as injuries, mental health struggles and difficulty transitioning to civilian life. Supporting veterans honors their sacrifice and ensures they receive the care, respect and opportunities they deserve.”
Last year, Kappa Sigma won the award for Most Volunteer Hours among any student organization at Washburn, which is a Purple Heart University. Washburn is also a recipient of the Military Friendly School award.
