Washburn Names New Student Life Leader
Topeka, Kan. – Washburn University announced today that Dr. Kimberly Chestnut has been named vice president for student life. Chestnut, who was selected through an extensive national search, will assume the role in June.
“Dr. Chestnut brings a dynamic energy along with a strong commitment to student well-being and success,” said Dr. JuliAnn Mazachek, president, Washburn. “With decades of leadership experience at public institutions, she connects with students in a unique way and is well-positioned to lead initiatives that enhance engagement and grow a vibrant campus experience.”
Chestnut will provide leadership for several areas at Washburn including the Memorial Union, residential living, student conduct, student engagement and wellness services. Guided by a student-centered vision, she will work to foster a thriving campus culture while supporting student retention and success.
“I am so pleased to be joining the Washburn community as the Vice President for Student Life,” Chestnut said. “I have spent my career in service of making the higher education experience more welcoming and supportive of all students. There is great work being done at Washburn and I look forward to helping advance its commitment to and investment in student success."
Chestnut most recently served as vice president for student affairs at the University of Wyoming, playing an instrumental role in launching the university’s student success program, as well as divisional strategic plan to enhance staff value and contribution. She also led initiatives focused on engaging all divisions across the institution in addition to the larger Wyoming community.
Prior to her time in Wyoming, she served as assistant vice president and assistant dean of students at West Chester University in West Chester, Pennsylvania. She began her career in higher education at Temple University in Philadelphia, where her work focused on student health and wellness.
Chestnut earned a doctorate in health and human services and a master’s degree in education from Widener University in Chester, Pennsylvania. She also earned a master’s degree in industrial and organizational psychology from George Washington University in Washington, D.C., and a bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Colorado Boulder.
