PianoFest Registration is Open Now through Oct. 11

     Topeka, Kan. –  The Washburn University Music & Theatre Department will host the annual PianoFest Oct. 17. PianoFest is a festival that celebrates group learning and offers students a chance to perform and receive feedback during informal masterclasses. The day-long learning opportunity includes keyboard workshops, music classes, piano literature topics, yoga and wellness classes and masterclasses. Activities are tailored to two student age groups: grades 1-5 and grades 6-12. This is an all-day event, but the morning is scheduled for grades 1-5 and the afternoon is scheduled for grades 6-12. All students must register by Oct. 11 and there is a fee to attend.

      “PianoFest offers students a chance to work together and learn together in group settings, bond with like-minded individuals who love piano and study with expert professionals in the field of music,” said Dr. Lucy Tan, Washburn University Music & Theatre Department director of keyboard studies/applied piano and faculty advisor for the Washburn Piano and Organ Society. “For piano students who learn in isolated settings of weekly piano lessons, PianoFest’s mission is to bring kids together through a sense of community and foster motivation for continued life-long piano learning.”

        The PianoFest clinician this year is Dr. Katherine Petersen Eadie, a Chicago-based pianist and performing artist of Duo FAE! She will teach a piano masterclass for students in grades 6-12.

Biography of Artist

            Petersen Eadie made her Carnegie Hall debut at the age of 17, with the Chicago Tribune later praising her ability to capture a "sense of wonder." Her global performances span Ravinia, Montreal’s Maison Symphonique and Musikverein in Vienna, Austria. A former member of the Fifth House Ensemble, she holds a Doctor of Music from McGill University and is a dedicated educator who has given masterclasses at the Eastman School of Music and the Curtis Institute. Free Concert

        PianoFest will conclude with a free piano recital by Petersen Eadie at 5 p.m. in Hurd Recital Hall. She will perform a piano recital featuring music by Florence Price and Kaija Saariaho. The recital is free and open to the public.
